The brief

Mayfair conservation refurbishment

JMS Engineers is delivering specialist structural and temporary works designs for the transformation of this six-storey Victorian corner building in Mayfair’s Conservation Area. The project will see the historic structure refurbished into a multi-functional gallery and HQ for a leading Asian arts collector.

Engineering response

Cantilevered gallery stair

A key feature of the design is a striking cantilevered floating stair, now taking shape with its permanent steelworks. Inspired by minimalist Japanese architecture, the gallery will provide modern, light-filled spaces to showcase rare Ming and Qing ceramics.

Delivery detail

Temporary works in a historic shell

JMS is also responsible for the temporary works design, including the structural support needed for replacing the ground floor slab. This complex process involves needling through external walls and extending works onto the pavement, ensuring stability while preserving the building’s architectural integrity.
