Large Balcony Installation

JMS Engineers recently completed the structural design for a large, covered terrace balcony in North Norfolk. The structure features a steel frame with beams and steel posts, designed to provide stability and support for the cantilevered balcony. A steel post, secured with deep mass concrete footings, resists overturning forces, while bolted connections tie the structure into the Isotex block wall for enhanced integrity.

Engineering response

Durability and balustrade detailing

The balcony floor comprises timber joists, with a glazed balustrade fixed using bolted RSAs and a timber sole plate. All exposed steelwork was galvanised for durability. Careful consideration was given to foundation stability, material selection, and long-term durability, ensuring the balcony met safety and performance standards.
