JMS Engineers collaborated with John Stebbing Architects on the redevelopment of a former public house at 73 Clapton Common, Hackney, into a modern synagogue to meet the community's growing needs. The project involved extensive structural work, including the construction of an 8.5-meter-deep, double-storey basement supported by a contiguous piled retaining wall. This basement housed study areas, a mikvah, and necessary changing facilities, with the upper basement benefiting from high-level windows due to the elevated ground floor.

Engineering response
The steel-framed superstructure featured a clear-span area of 19 by 15 meters, achieved through steel lattice girders supporting an in-situ reinforced concrete deck, ensuring column-free worship and study spaces. Additionally, JMS designed comprehensive drainage systems to manage both surface and foul water effectively.
