Structural Engineering
Vertical Extension
JMS Engineers recently completed structural works for a mixed-use development in Wickford, Essex involving a vertical extension to an existing three-storey masonry structure. A steel transfer grillage was installed at roof level to distribute loads, supporting a lightweight timber or Steel Framing System (SFS) for the new floor. Foundation assessments confirmed the suitability of the existing strip foundations and suspended pre-cast concrete floors without the need for significant reinforcement. The steel frame was designed with bolted connections and horizontal ties to ensure structural stability. The design adhered to Part A of the Building Regulations, with considerations for fire safety and acoustic performance. JMS Engineers collaborated closely with architects, contractors, and building control to ensure seamless integration of structural elements while maintaining stability and efficiency.
