Fire-damaged buildings often get written off as too far gone - but from a structural engineer’s perspective, 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙚. In fact, some of the most interesting projects we’ve worked on started life as fire-damaged shells.
When a fire strips back plaster, ceilings and finishes, 𝙞𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜’𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮. Original construction methods, hidden alterations, and even previous repair attempts are suddenly laid bare - and they don’t always match what the plans say.
We’ve seen first-hand how heat can weaken brickwork, distort steelwork, and leave timber beyond salvage. But fire-damaged doesn’t mean beyond repair - with 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙚, these buildings can be given a whole new lease of life.
Take 𝙎𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙮’𝙨 𝙇𝙤𝙙𝙜𝙚 in Stoke Newington. Left in ruins by fire, this historic mansion could have been lost - but instead, it’s being transformed. We combined careful structural repairs with a new basement design and a 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙚 to support reconstructed floors and facades, giving the building a new structural backbone while preserving its character.
Every fire-damaged building is different, but the principle remains the same: 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙧.
