Barking Magistrates Court
Refurbishment and change of use of existing Grade 2 Listed Building from a Magistrates Court to 13 residential units with retail space at ground floor level. Addition of a glazed walkway and erection of a new 6 storey residential building to form 24 residential units and retail space at ground floor level.
JMS were appointed to provide a full civil and structural design and undertake overall Project Management of the scheme on behalf of the client.
The structure of the existing building was retained and strengthened to suit the change of use. A new roof provided over. The refurbishment retained many of the original features.
The new 6 storey building was designed as a reinforced concrete frame constructed off a pile and ground beam foundation. Close liaison with the Planners, Archaeologists and English Heritage was required due to the sites location and tight construction program.
